Overview:
Have you ever seen a buffalo up close? Custer State Park is home to 1,300 roaming buffalo that can often be spotted from the Wildlife Loop Road. The road is one of the park's 3 scenic drives, each ranging between 14 to 18 miles and lasting approximately an hour. In addition to the Wildlife Loop, there is the Needles Highway (named for granite formations resembling needles) and the Iron Mountain Road. The latter connects Custer State Park to the Mount Rushmore National Memorial, offering glimpses of the famed Mount Rushmore along the way. Custer State Park is located in the Black Hills of South Dakota, just over an hour southwest of Rapid City.
